Home Office

When I was younger, and decided I wanted to be a working photographer, I thought it would be none stop adventure. I thought I would be outdoors everyday photographing something new. Well, now that I am a working photographer, I have found out that a good portion of the work a photographer does is spent on a computer. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t trade being a photographer for any other job and there are days where it is none stop adventure. If you are thinking about wanting to become a working photographer, just know that on some days, your mornings and evenings will be spent in your home office. Whether you’re answering emails, setting up photo shoots, or evening checking the weather. Below is a photograph I took showing my home office.

Packing light

As people know, my approach to camera gear is “carry it all with you.” I paid the price for this a few weeks ago. While picking up my ThinkTank bag, which was holding about 50 pounds of gear, I tore the muscle in my lower stomach. Now that the muscle is all healed, I have been making an effort to only carry a few things with me. These things usually consist of a camera, film, passport (if traveling), and maybe a notebook. This photograph shows the bag and it’s contents that I carried today. Here’s to no more ripped stomach muscles.

My take on Fish and Chips

Like I have said many times on this blog, I love photographing food. This week, I went out and shot my second photograph in my recent personal project series. If you have read my other posts about this project, you know that I am shooting the ingredients of my favorite dishes, along with the completed dish itself. This weeks dish was Masala crusted Sea Bass with spicy chips. During the planning and shopping for this shoot, I discovered that it is very hard to find fresh whole fish. I had to drive thirty-five minutes to find my perfect fish. However, when everything was all said and done, I was and still am very happy with the image I created.

The Coffee Wizard

If you know me, then you know about my love for coffee. It does not matter the time of day or night that it is,   I will drink some sort of coffee. In life, it is always great to be around people who share the same passions as yourself. So when we were given the assignment to shoot a portrait of someone, and have that portrait describe them, I knew Justin was my man. We had been talking about wanting to do this kind of portrait for a long time. However, like everyone else, life kept getting in the way. Finally, our schedules matched up for a couple minutes and we were able to capture this magical moment.

Summing up my week

What a week! Since we were one day short this week ( because of Labor day ), getting all of the assignments that we were given shot was a challenging task. To get everything done that needed to be, a few thirteen hour days were spent inside the studio. When you are putting in that many hours inside the studio, coffee becomes your best friend. However, when you are already best friends with coffee, a thirteen hour day can make you intake a very unhealthy amount of caffeine. I really think that this photograph sums up my week perfectly. I took this photograph Wednesday morning when I woke up from my 4 hour nights sleep. I immediately made coffee, loaded film, and started sending some emails. After the last email was sent, which was around 7am, I headed back to the studio for another day’s work.

Spaghetti and Meatballs

For one of our photography classes, we were given the assignment to photograph a five image series for a personal project. The photographs in this personal project have to all be related in some way. As I discussed in the earlier blog post, I have decided to do my personal project about the ingredients to my five favorite dishes. This photograph is of the ingredients to spaghetti and meatballs. I have always loved eating this dish. Growing up, we would have spaghetti and meatballs at least once a week. I am really excited to continue this project and share my images on this blog.

Personal Project

In photography, it is important to have personal projects. One of the reasons it is important is it lets you relax and photograph something that you want. I have been thinking about what my new personal project should be. After a very long time of not deciding, I finally found the answer! FOOD!!!!! ( Shocking I know ) Before I was a full time student, I traveled to England very often. During these travels, I learned to cook a wide variety of dishes from around the world. Some of my favorite dishes are types of curry. I learned these dishes from either my girlfriend’s mom, or from the cooks at different Indian restaurants. One of the most beautiful parts about cooking to me is the ingredients. You can have ingredients that are super bright and colorful, or dull and dark. So when it came to deciding on a personal project, I decided that the ingredients to my favorite dishes are what I am going to focus on. These 2 images were taken in my available light studio ( aka apartment ) and are the ingredients to yesterday’s breakfast and lunch.

Food is life

Growing up, I have always loved food. This is probably due to growing up with my family all being good cooks. This love of food has translated into my photography. Wherever and whenever I go get lunch out somewhere, I take my camera to document the moment. I believe that food, much like photography, can change how a person feels during that day. Capturing the mood of a certain food, or the mood of the restaurant, is my main goal with my food photography. The photograph below was taking this afternoon at The Table Farm Bakery in Asheboro, N.C. This is their Tomato Basil Bisque. It is one of the best tomato soups I have ever had.
